“My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from Him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will never be shaken”. Psalm 62: 5 & 6
King David is an excellent picture of trust. We see this all through the book of Psalms especially. These verses in Psalm 62 are very good for me to read again and again because they build confidence in me and I hope in you. As you know I am always reading and the book I am currently reading is by a man called Mark Buchanan called The Rest of God. Bishop Ken gave this book to me as a gift in the last few weeks and it has been a blessing.
The book is all about Sabbath and why it is so important for our wellbeing. The practice of Sabbath is not a dusty, distant idea that is just for someone else, it is for all, not to burden but to bless. There was good reason for the Apostle Paul to call us to a renewing of our minds because let’s face it God is found to be more
interested in changing our thinking than our circumstances.
King David, in the middle of his many crazy days wrote these powerful words in Psalm 62. Not because he had nothing better to do, but because trusting in God, finding rest in God alone was a matter of survival. David was hounded by those who longed for his downfall and the only way to truly rest in a world like that, a world of flawed humanity including us, is to find rest in God alone.
Our rest, our renewing has to come from God alone. You know the more we grow in faith the bigger God becomes. But remember that when heaven breaks in quite often hell breaks loose. We have choices to make. Who is it that we put our trust in, ultimately? David was not a fool, he was considered a man after God’s own heart and if he declares that he found rest in God alone then that is where we too will know we can find rest and renewal.
