I suspect this is a question you have never asked – or maybe you have! For me, it is something I have thought about quite a lot lately. And yet even the question is wrong, because by asking ‘how big is God?’ I immediately put a limit on him. And God is limitless. When I think about God I am tempted to try and use him.

When I am in trouble, please help me. When all is going well, please stay out of my way and let me get on with life. Or when things really get out of hand, why did you not intervene and get me out of this mess? So how do you see God?

One passage in scripture that continues to challenge me is Isaiah 6, verses 1-8. In this passage Isaiah has a vision of God and it terrifies him. He sees a God who is so big that the train of His robe fills the temple. And if you want an idea of how big the temple was, have a look at 2 Chronicles chapters 2-4. No-one could look at God and live, and even Moses hid as God passes by, because His glory was too great for a mere man to comprehend.

And yet we continually try and bring God down to our size, perhaps so that we can try and understand Him. But for Isaiah, God was all-powerful and his reaction was to see himself as a man of unclean lips and one who was lost. But God saw him as someone whom He could send to speak to the people of Israel. “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then I said, ‘Here I am! Send me.’

For me, I was challenged as to where I am willing to go for God, but it only means something when I get a better picture of who God is and that He is beyond my comprehension. God is the creator of the universe, the one who created everything simply by speaking. (have a look at Genesis 1!) He is the one who considers you and me to be priceless, worthy of allowing his Son to come to earth and die on a cross, so that by His death and resurrection, we can be with Him forever – if we ask Him! How big is our God? He is beyond our understanding. He is everywhere, including within us and He knows everything about everyone who has ever lived. That is almost unbelievable. It is scary but yet very reassuring, because I cannot fool God. I am forever grateful that (in the words of a children’s chorus) my God is so big, so strong and so mighty there’s nothing that He cannot do! Maybe it is time to let Him have control of our lives. After all, He made u!

God bless, Adam
