Over the summer months in Church, we looked at a number of passages from Matthew’s gospel which gave some insight into what it must have been like to be one of the disciples. For three years they followed this man, recognising him as a brilliant teacher and healer, but not really understanding just who this man Jesus was.

And then one day the penny dropped. This man Jesus is more than just a man – He is the promised Messiah, the Son of the living God. We have the benefit of hindsight and we have the gospels. For us, the picture should be clearer and yet for many, perhaps even you, the penny has still not dropped.

For the disciples, the Messiah surely meant freedom from Roman rule and Israel being restored as God’s chosen people. But for God, the Messiah – Jesus Christ – was the means to salvation for all people. For God, the death and resurrection of His Son was the only way He could accept us into His Kingdom, where perfection and purity is in heaven and the only way we can be made perfect before God is for someone perfect to pay the penalty for our sins and mistakes.

And the amazing thing is God gives us all a free choice to accept Him or reject Him. For the disciples, they only fully
understood after Jesus died and was raised from the dead on that first Easter morning. For me, the penny dropped many years ago and I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour. I pray that as you read this and as you consider who Jesus is to you, you will come to the only conclusion that makes sense. Jesus Christ is alive and is the Son of God. The next step is for you and me to follow him and give our lives to serving him and each other. Then we can truly live! God bless
